Sixth Form Inspired by RSC’s Othello
On Tuesday 21 November, St Gabriel’s Sixth Form English and Drama pupils had the privilege of visiting Stratford-upon-Avon to see the Royal Shakespeare Company’s electrifying production of Othello.
Set against the backdrop of Venice’s political intrigue, this timeless tragedy follows Othello, a celebrated general at the height of his power, as he battles the machinations of his vengeful subordinate, Iago. The production, directed by Tim Carroll, featured an exceptional cast: John Douglas Thompson as Othello, Will Keen as the scheming Iago, and Juliet Rylance as the ill-fated Desdemona.
The performance captivated the audience, bringing Shakespeare’s themes of love, jealousy, and betrayal vividly to life. Students were particularly struck by the dynamic staging and powerful portrayals of these iconic characters, which deepened their understanding of the play’s complexities.
For our Sixth Form students, this was an invaluable opportunity to experience live theatre from one of the world’s most renowned companies, enhancing their studies and inspiring their own creative exploration.
Head of Drama, Ruth Chaplin, remarked: “The RSC’s Othello was a masterclass in storytelling and performance. It’s an experience our students will treasure and draw upon in their academic and artistic journeys. The trip marks another enriching milestone in the cultural education of St Gabriel’s pupils, fostering a lifelong appreciation for Shakespeare and the performing arts."
