Year 1 go back in time!
Year 1 had a fantastic day out at Milestones Museum in Basingstoke - immersing themselves in living history!
This was the grand finale of the past half-term's learning in our History topic 'New Toys and Old Toys'. Throughout the fun day, they experienced play time in the past through active participation with a range of old toys and games, comparing the museum's toys with the toys of today. The children were led by Emily, the toy 'shop owner' in full costume, through the old winding streets and shops. Traditional games were played, such as Hopscotch, dominoes and singing games 'Oranges and Lemons' and 'The Farmers in the Den'.
Milestones staff were amazed that children at St Gabriel's school still play these games at playtime and 4-6 club! And the children were equally amazed that their grandparents and great-grandparents entertained themselves by playing these games in the past. One of the highlights was the new Mr Simpon's Teddy Bear Museum which displays more than 250 bears, a fascinating tour from an olden day's tram driver, shopping and unexpected spooky Halloween surprises popping up throughout the day. Mrs Webb and the Year 1 team were very impressed by our young historian's excellent behaviour and interest in their first trip of the year.
