Individual Needs
The Individual Needs Department provides for the additional learning needs of pupils at any stage of their education. We closely monitor the progress of all pupils in the basic skills of reading and spelling and also respond to referral from subject teachers. We offer both short-term and long-term support, working towards the goal of independent learning.
The department offers regular one-to-one sessions with a SpLD qualified member of staff. A bespoke teaching programme is designed for each student, which may range from assisting a pupil in Reception or Year 1 with letter formation, basic reading, spelling and coping with numbers to supporting a pupil with advanced study skills, speed reading and essay writing techniques at GCSE and A level. Any examination access arrangements, which may be necessary, are also organised by the department in conjunction with the Examinations Officer. We offer advice and support regarding external professional assessments.
The department communicates proactively with teaching staff and parents, maintaining electronic pupil passports detailing strengths and difficulties, advice and teaching points. In addition, support and achievement plans are written, as requested, in conjunction with Junior School staff.
We run a paired reading programme between Junior School pupils and Sixth Form to foster a love of reading.
"St Gabriel's helps raise polite, self-confident young adults with principles. With small class sizes, children must join in with discussions, which builds confidence and helps them get a real sense of who they are. I can't praise them enough for making my daughter feel cherished and welcomed. They offer the best teaching without the pressure many schools pile on!"
