Exploring Spectroscopy with Southampton University
St Gabriel’s A-Level Chemistry students had the privilege of attending an inspiring Spectroscopy workshop delivered by two representatives from the University of Southampton.
Owen, an apprentice lab technician, and Ellie, a postgraduate student, introduced students to the cutting-edge world of spectroscopic techniques and their wide-ranging applications.
The highlight of the workshop was the opportunity to use a table-top FTIR (Fourier-Transform Infrared) Spectrometer, providing hands-on experience with advanced laboratory equipment worth over £16,000. Owen kicked off the session with an engaging presentation exploring the differences between spectroscopy (the interaction between light and matter) and spectrometry (the measurement process itself), and a variety of analytical techniques, including FTIR and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) Spectroscopy.
The students learnt about the science behind these techniques, the distinct data sets they produce, and their fascinating real-world applications. Examples range from the use of Rapid Evaporative Ionisation Mass Spectrometry in surgical tools like the ‘Intelligent Knife,’ which detects cancerous tissue in real time, to gas spectroscopy systems employed at airports to identify hazardous substances in luggage and on passengers.
The workshop concluded with a practical challenge: students were tasked with identifying the composition of eight unknown compounds. Armed with the FTIR spectrometer and additional datasets, they put their knowledge to the test in a realistic and investigative lab setting.
Chemistry teacher Karen Ali, praised the session: “This workshop offered our students an invaluable opportunity to experience advanced scientific techniques first-hand. It’s not every day they get to work with equipment of this calibre and see its direct application to cutting-edge technologies.”
