Year 1 Bring Castle Life to St Gabriel’s

Year 1 pupils stepped back in time for a magical mediaeval experience, bringing their Castles learning topic to life with a hands-on historical adventure!
Thanks to a special loan from the Hampshire County Council History Curriculum Centre, both Year 1 classes explored a treasure trove of ‘Castle Life’ artefacts, giving them a fascinating glimpse into mediaeval times. The collection included authentic cooking equipment, tableware, and ornate wall hangings, setting the scene for an immersive role-play session.
Dressed in full mediaeval attire, Mrs Ryder and Mrs Webb guided the children through the customs and traditions of a mediaeval feast. Pupils took on the roles of Lord and Lady Gabriel, their noble guests, knights, musicians, and hard-working servants, recreating a banquet fit for royalty. They explored mediaeval dining customs, discussing the unusual delicacies of the time—from familiar roast chicken to the more extravagant swan and porcupine!
Handling the artefacts and stepping into character made for an engaging and unforgettable learning experience. Year 1’s castle adventure truly brought history to life.
