Exploring the Eternal City: Seniors Trip to Rome

Over the Easter break, pupils from Years 10 to 13 embarked on an unforgettable journey to Rome, immersing themselves in the rich history, art, and culture of one of the world’s most iconic cities.

With an early start on Tuesday 1 April, the group departed from Heathrow on a 5:30 am flight, ready for an adventure-packed itinerary that would take them through the heart of ancient and Renaissance Rome.

Day 1: Arrival and First Glimpses of Rome

Touching down in Italy just before lunchtime, the group made their way to the Hotel Floridia, their base for the trip. After settling in, they set off to explore some of Rome’s most famous landmarks. Wandering through the vibrant streets, they visited the stunning Piazza Navona, known for its striking fountains and lively atmosphere.

Next on the itinerary was the breathtaking Trevi Fountain, where many took part in the tradition of tossing a coin over their shoulder into the water—legend has it this ensures a return trip to Rome! The group then climbed the Spanish Steps, one of Rome’s most famous landmarks, offering a fantastic view over the bustling Piazza di Spagna.

As evening approached, the pupils made their way to the Pantheon, a marvel of ancient engineering and now the Basilica of St Mary of the Martyrs. With its vast domed ceiling and oculus, the Pantheon remains one of the best-preserved monuments of Ancient Rome. This self-guided visit allowed the pupils to take in the grandeur of this nearly 2,000-year-old architectural wonder. The evening concluded with a delicious Italian meal before heading back for a well-earned rest.

Day 2: The Wonders of Ancient Rome

The next morning began with a visit to the Colosseum, the world-famous amphitheatre that once hosted gladiatorial battles, animal hunts, and grand spectacles. With a guided tour, pupils delved into the history of this nearly 2,000-year-old arena, walking through its towering arches and imagining the roaring crowds of Ancient Rome.

The exploration continued with a visit to the Roman Forum, the heart of political, social, and commercial life in ancient times. Wandering amongst the ruins of temples, basilicas, and government buildings, the group gained a deeper understanding of Rome’s past. They also climbed Palatine Hill, one of the legendary Seven Hills of Rome, which is said to be the very spot where Romulus founded the city in 753 BC.

In the afternoon, the group travelled to the Baths of Caracalla, once one of the largest and most luxurious bathing complexes in the Roman Empire. This vast archaeological site provided an incredible insight into the grandeur of Roman leisure culture. The day ended with a visit to the Circus Maximus, the enormous chariot-racing stadium that could hold up to 250,000 spectators at its peak.

Day 3: Vatican City and the Artistic Treasures of Rome

Thursday’s itinerary took the group on an artistic and spiritual journey, starting at the Museo dell'Ara Pacis, home to the beautifully preserved Altar of Augustan Peace, a monument celebrating Emperor Augustus’ achievements.

From there, the pupils took the metro to St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world and the centre of Catholicism. They marvelled at Michelangelo’s stunning dome, the intricate mosaics, and the grandeur of Bernini’s Baldacchino, before continuing their exploration at the Vatican Museums.

A guided tour took them through the museum’s vast collection of art, including ancient sculptures, Renaissance masterpieces, and, of course, the Sistine Chapel. Here, they stood in awe beneath Michelangelo’s legendary frescoes, including the world-famous "Creation of Adam".

Day 4: A Relaxing Finale at Villa Borghese

On their final morning, the group enjoyed a change of pace with a visit to Villa Borghese, Rome’s largest and most picturesque public park. Surrounded by lush gardens, tranquil lakes, and beautiful sculptures, pupils soaked up the last moments of their Roman adventure. Some took a leisurely stroll, while others explored the park’s stunning museums, fountains, and classical statues.

As the afternoon arrived, it was time to bid farewell to the Eternal City. With suitcases packed and countless unforgettable memories, the group made their way to the airport, homeward-bound after an incredible journey through Rome’s past and present.
