Leon Hicks to Run 200th Marathon in a Rhino Suit for Save the Rhino International

St Gabriel’s Catering Manager, Leon Hicks, is preparing to take on a truly wild challenge this weekend as he runs the London Marathon on Sunday 27 April — dressed in a full 12kg rhino costume!

This year’s event will be Leon’s 200th marathon, and his fifth time running the London course — but it will be the first time he’s done it in full rhino attire. Leon is using this milestone to raise vital funds and awareness for Save the Rhino International, a global charity dedicated to the conservation of endangered rhino species.

Leon will be running alongside his friend Rhino Boy Chris, who recently paid a special visit to St Gabriel’s Junior School. During his time at the school, Chris delivered an engaging talk on rhino conservation and the urgent threats these incredible animals face in the wild. Pupils also had the opportunity to train with both Chris and Leon as they got in some final prep for the big day — much to everyone’s delight!

The London Marathon is one of the world’s most prestigious running events, attracting over 56,000 participants, around 750,000 spectators, and an estimated 4+ million television viewers. It also raises over £35 million each year for charitable causes across the UK and around the world.

Despite his wealth of running experience, Leon admits that running in costume will be no easy feat:

“The London Marathon is always an amazing experience and I’m proud to be supporting Save the Rhino — but I must admit I’m a bit nervous this time! The forecast is 22 degrees, which is lovely for the crowds but less so when you're running in a 12kg rhino suit! I may end up like the rhino in Jumanji — a bit slow and steady — but I’m not chasing records. For me, it’s about embracing the challenge and raising awareness for a fantastic cause.”

Everyone at St Gabriel’s is cheering Leon on as he embarks on this remarkable challenge. We are so proud of his passion, perseverance and the example he sets — both in and out of the kitchen!

Good luck, Leon — we’re all rooting for you!
