Year 3 Journey Back in Time to Roman Britain

On Thursday, 27th February, Year 3 pupils from St Gabriel's embarked on an exciting educational adventure to Reading Museum.
This trip was part of their ongoing learning about Roman Life, and it provided an exceptional opportunity for the children to immerse themselves in history through hands-on experiences and interactive activities.
The highlight of the day was a fascinating session in the Museum's Silchester Gallery, which houses a wealth of Roman artefacts from local excavations. As part of the interactive session, the pupils delved into the rich history of Roman Britain, learning about how the Romans lived and explored the responses of British tribes to the arrival of the Roman Empire. The children focused on the case study of Calleva Atrebatum, a Roman town located around 10 miles from Reading, near present-day Silchester.
The children had the chance to work with and handle real Roman artefacts, gaining a deeper understanding of life in Roman times. They also got to dress up in replica Roman costumes, bringing the ancient world to life in a fun and engaging way. The role-play activities encouraged pupils to imagine what life might have been like for a Roman citizen and their interactions with the local tribes of Britain.
In addition to the hands-on experiences, the pupils were treated to a fascinating tour of the museum. They explored Roman games, pottery, and decorative mosaics, discovering how the Romans expressed creativity and leisure through these artefacts. From learning about Roman daily life to engaging in playful activities, it was a memorable experience for everyone.
This trip was a wonderful way to enhance the Year 3 curriculum, making Roman history more tangible and accessible for the children. It provided a unique opportunity to explore the ancient world and brought the subject matter to life.
A big thank you to Reading Museum for hosting such an engaging and informative session!
