An Evening with the Air Ambulance
On Wednesday, 13th November, St Gabriel’s Society had the privilege of hosting a memorable evening with Lucy Butcher, Supporter Engagement Officer at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Students from St Gabriel’s, St Bart’s, and Kennet Schools, along with parents and staff, were captivated by the dedication and expertise that this vital emergency service brings to our communities.
Lucy shared insights into the challenging yet rewarding paths aspiring medics can take to work in this field, along with the history and mission of the Air Ambulance charity. Many were surprised to discover that, unlike the NHS, the air ambulance service is entirely charity-funded. There are only 27 air ambulances across the country, each reliant on public generosity to cover all costs—from helicopters and emergency vehicles to essential medical supplies.
The evening also highlighted the unique abilities of the air ambulance team. Not only do they operate helicopters, but they also deploy emergency response cars, each fully equipped to provide the same life-saving care as the aircraft, including procedures typically beyond the scope of regular paramedics. The air ambulance’s team of emergency doctors, surgeons, and specialist nurses are qualified to perform roadside surgery, enabling them to save lives in situations that might otherwise prove fatal.
The event highlighted the St Gabriel’s Society’s commitment to hosting talks with industry leaders, open to the wider local community. At the close of the evening, a donation was presented to support the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, with additional fundraisers planned throughout the school year, including a Home Clothes Day and a Silent Auction - watch this space for more details!
The evening was a reminder of the profound impact a community can make when it comes together in support of a truly life-saving cause.
