Year 13 Biologists Investigate DNA at Baylab

On Tuesday, 26 November, St Gabriel’s Year 13 Biology students took part in a fascinating forensics workshop at Baylab, Bayer’s cutting-edge facility in Reading.

The workshop provided students with the opportunity to explore advanced forensic techniques, immersing themselves in practical applications of DNA analysis. They delved into the world of PCA (Polymerase Chain Reaction), learning how this revolutionary technique is used to amplify DNA samples for study. Students also gained hands-on experience with electrophoresis, a method that separates DNA fragments to create unique DNA profiles.

These tools, commonly used in forensic science, allow investigators to identify individuals from minuscule biological samples. The workshop tied perfectly into the students’ A Level Biology curriculum, offering an engaging way to see their studies come to life in a real-world context.

In addition to the technical learning, the workshop gave insight into the broader field of biotechnology and its applications in medicine, research, and criminal investigations.

Head of Biology, Dr Rebecca Dennis, said: “The workshop was an excellent opportunity for our students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a professional lab setting. It’s experiences like these that inspire future scientists and demonstrate how classroom learning can lead to impactful careers.”

The trip to Baylab proved to be both educational and inspiring, giving students a glimpse into the fascinating and ever-evolving field of forensics.
