St Gabriel’s

Junior Instrumental Project Performance

On the morning of Wednesday 12 February, parents gathered at St Gabriel’s for the much-anticipated Junior Instrumental Project Performance.

With warming teas and coffees from our on-site café, they settled in for a fantastic musical showcase at 8:45am, featuring pupils from Years 1 to 6.

The Junior Instrumental Project is an exciting, class-based initiative that allows pupils to explore a variety of instruments throughout their early years of musical education. Each year group focusses on a different instrument:
🎵 Years 1 & 2 – Recorder
🎻 Year 3 – Violin
🎷 Year 4 – Chalumeau (a reeded instrument, somewhat akin to a recorder and clarinet)
🎺 Year 5 – pBone (a smaller pupil-friendly trombone)
🎸 Year 6 – Ukulele

Under the expert guidance of Mrs Bloxsom and Ms Woodhouse, each class performed a piece they had been learning together. Some of the senior pupils also gave demonstrations, showcasing the techniques they had mastered and the variety of sounds their instruments could produce.

The performance culminated in a grand finale, bringing all the instruments together for a group piece. It was the first time they had played as one ensemble, making for an impressive and dynamic sound—a true testament to their teamwork and dedication!

The Junior Instrumental Project is not only an opportunity for pupils to develop practical musical skills, but also fosters essential teamwork, coordination, and active listening. Through this experience, children gain confidence and a deeper appreciation for music, which may inspire them to pursue an instrument beyond the classroom.

Parents thoroughly enjoyed watching their children perform, working together as a team, and taking pride in their musical progress. It was a wonderful morning, celebrating both the hard work and joy of learning music at St Gabriel’s.

Well done to all our talented young musicians!
