Year 6 have learnt about children who were evacuated during the war, and the reasons why this was necessary. They were particularly struck by the fact that communication with home was very limited. They began to understand the physical and emotional impacts that this may have had on the children. 

Year 6 were really excited to be presented with three evacuee suitcases this morning. The cases were kindly loaned to us by Hampshire County Council and so all the artefacts contained within them were completely authentic. Year 6 had a wonderful time unwrapping each item from its tissue and bubble wrap, and discussing what it was and how it was possibly used. Some of their favourite items were tinned egg powder, a very itchy balaclava, coins in a leather pouch, and the rubber gas masks. The copies of photographs, letters and postcards from home were very moving, and it was lovely to see how respectfully Year 6 spoke of these, as well as their careful handling of the artefacts.
