Flipping Fun on Pancake Day at St Gabriel’s!
Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is always a highlight of the Spring Term at St Gabriel’s, and this year was no exception!
Pupils of all ages got involved in a range of pancake-themed activities, celebrating both the delicious tradition and its fascinating history.
In Reception, pupils enjoyed a morning of pancake-inspired fun, from tackling a pancake-themed word search to getting creative by designing their own pancake recipes. The excitement reached its peak when they had the chance to mix their own batter, cook, flip, and top their very own pancakes before tucking in—certainly a hands-on way to learn about food!
Meanwhile, in the Food Tech kitchens, Years 4 and 5 took part in a special Pancake Day cookery class, where they had the opportunity to whisk, fry, and flip their own creations before sampling their delicious results.
Did you know?
Shrove Tuesday is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Historically, it was the last chance to use up eggs and fats before the 40-day Lenten fast, making pancakes the perfect dish for the occasion! The tradition dates back centuries, with pancakes first recorded in cookery books as early as 1439.
Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, meaning the date varies each year. In 2026, it will be on 17 February—so mark your calendars for more flipping fun next year!
A big well done to all our pupils for their enthusiasm and creativity—whether in the kitchen, solving pancake puzzles, or simply enjoying a tasty treat. What’s your favourite pancake topping?
