Introducing "Outdoor Explorers" in Pre-School: Nurturing Independence, Curiosity, and a Love of Nature
We’re excited to announce the launch of Outdoor Explorers—an exciting new outdoor education program for our Pre-School children at St Gabriel’s Nursery.
Designed to immerse our youngest learners in hands-on experiences within the natural environment of our campus, Outdoor Explorers is led by Nursery workers David and Miriam, who have recently completed specialist training to create a safe and enriching outdoor learning environment. The program is currently for children who will be starting school in September next year.
The program kicked off with its first adventure on Friday, 8 November, as the children explored the Reception Class woods. During this first session, they learnt about both the excitement and safety of outdoor play. The young explorers inspected areas to stay mindful of, identifying potential hazards like the pond, tree roots, stinging nettles, and ivy. Alongside these safety checks, they enjoyed exploring dens, relaxing in hammocks, identifying plants, and discussing the creatures that might inhabit the bug hotels. And, of course, one of the highlights was crunching through the autumn leaves!
Each session of Outdoor Explorers is designed to build independence, enhance physical skills, and encourage social-emotional growth. As David explains, “Our sessions will empower children to take risks, think critically, and develop a sense of responsibility towards the environment. Above all, we want to spark their curiosity and foster a life-long love of nature.”
Through activities like den-building, crafting with natural materials, and learning to safely assess risks, our Pre-Schoolers will not only develop healthy bodies and minds but also gain a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. We look forward to watching our young learners thrive as they embark on many more outdoor adventures with Outdoor Explorers!
