Pre-School Celebrates Diwali with a Special Cookery Session
This morning, our Pre-School room welcomed a special visitor: Sonny’s grandmother, who led an exciting cookery session in honour of Diwali, the Festival of Lights!
She taught the children how to make Poori (or Puri), a traditional Indian fried bread made with just three ingredients: wheat flour, salt, and water. Poori is often enjoyed as a side dish with curries, particularly those made with potatoes.
The children loved getting hands-on, forming small balls of unleavened dough and rolling them out into discs with mini rolling pins. These tasty treats will be cooked up for a special Diwali celebration later today.
Diwali, a five-day festival celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains worldwide, symbolises new beginnings and the triumph of light over darkness. It’s a time of joy and gratitude, and for some, it coincides with the harvest and New Year celebrations. The festival’s dates vary each year, falling between October and November according to the lunar Hindu calendar.
We wish a very Happy Diwali to all who celebrate! Thank you to Sonny’s grandmother for sharing this wonderful tradition with us.
