Rhino Boy Chris Inspires St Gabriel’s pupils

On Wednesday 26 March, St Gabriel’s Juniors and Nursery pupils were treated to an unforgettable visit from fundraiser and activist Chris Green, better known as 'Rhino Boy Chris'.
Since 2009, Chris has been a passionate advocate for the charity Save the Rhino International, raising awareness and funds for rhino conservation. His dedication has seen him complete over 109 marathons in his iconic 12kg rhino costume, along with other extreme endurance challenges – all in the name of protecting these incredible creatures.
During Junior School assembly, Chris shared fascinating facts about rhinos, the threats they face, and the crucial work being done to save them. The pupils were full of curiosity, asking questions such as "How many rhinos are left in the world?" (shockingly, only 27,000 remain in the wild), "Which is your favourite rhino?", and "What’s your fastest marathon time?" (an impressive 4 hours and 6 minutes!).
Chris and fellow rhino runner Leon Hicks (St Gabriel’s own Catering Manager) then spent the morning at St Gabriel’s, leading a special ‘Run with the Rhino’ session on the back field. Each Junior year group had the chance to come outside in the sunshine, see the rhino suits up close, ask questions, and even join Chris and Leon for a quick training session, as they jogged a few laps of the field. It was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to experience first-hand the effort it takes to run in the costume and to learn more about the cause. While on site, Chris and Leon also visited St Gabriel's Nursery, surprising the Pre-School children who were awed to discover two rhinos in their playground!
Chris also spoke about his upcoming challenge: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in his rhino suit! But before that, he will take on the London Marathon this April, and this year, he won’t be running alone. Leon will be joining him—also in a rhino suit! A keen runner, this will be Leon’s 200th marathon, making it an extra-special milestone.
It was an inspiring session that left our pupils in awe of Chris’s dedication and the importance of conservation. We wish Chris and Leon the best of luck for the London Marathon and beyond!
