St Gabriel’s Maths Challenge Inspires Young Mathematicians

St Gabriel’s was thrilled to host its much-anticipated annual Maths Challenge today, welcoming more than 20 teams of talented Year 5 pupils from local state and independent schools across Hampshire and Berkshire.

The event, a staple in our school calendar, was packed with fun, thought-provoking mathematical challenges designed to ignite a passion for problem-solving among young learners.

This year, the competition was run by Mathematical Education Innovation (MEI), a fantastic charity dedicated to improving lives through advances in maths education. MEI brought an exciting twist to the challenge with their Dragon Quiz! Teams of four pupils worked together to crack tricky mathematical conundrums, earning a piece of a Chinese dragon for each successfully completed set of questions. The goal? To build the longest dragon— and, of course, to win!

After an afternoon of impressive teamwork and mathematical prowess, Hamstead Norreys Primary School emerged victorious, letting out an enormous cheer as their win was announced. Hungerford Primary School secured the runner-up spot, showcasing incredible problem-solving abilities and collaboration.

The event ended on a high note as parents joined for refreshments, celebrating the fantastic efforts of all participants.

Mr Pete Dove, Head of St Gabriel’s Juniors, was full of praise for the young mathematicians:

“It was a fantastic afternoon, filled with excitement, teamwork, and mathematical brilliance. Seeing so many young minds fully engaged and enjoying the challenge was truly inspiring. Every pupil should be proud of their efforts, and we extend our congratulations to all the teams who took part. We are grateful to the MEI for delivering such an innovative and stimulating competition.”

The St Gabriel’s Maths Challenge continues to be a highlight of the school year, reinforcing the importance of mathematics in education and encouraging young learners to think critically and collaboratively. We can’t wait to see what next year’s challenge will bring!
