Year 9's Memorable Visit to the WW1 Battlefields in Belgium
As Remembrance Sunday approaches, we reflect on Year 9’s recent trip to the WW1 Battlefields in Belgium, an experience that deepened their understanding of the events and sacrifices of the First World War.
Based in Ypres, students explored historical sites, gaining a hands-on perspective of life on the front lines and the impact of war.
During the trip, students visited the recreated trenches at Hooge, where they tried on WW1 uniforms, examined weaponry, and even fired blank rounds under expert supervision. They also explored Tyne Cot and Langemark Cemeteries, where they reflected on the different types of commemoration, laying a memorial cross at the grave of unknown soldiers.
A moving highlight of the trip was their participation in the Menin Gate ceremony, where students laid a wreath on behalf of St Gabriel's, honouring the fallen in this powerful and enduring tradition. They also learnt about the chain of evacuation during the war, gaining insights into the challenges and realities faced by soldiers and medical teams.
Reflecting on the experience, Year 9 pupil James shared, "The Battlefields trip was a wonderful experience that I would do again in a heartbeat. Thanks to the hard work of the history department and our tour guides, it was truly memorable. From the tour of the front line to the mind-boggling Menin Gate, it really puts in perspective the scale of WW1.”
This journey into the past has given our Year 9 pupils a profound connection to history and to the significance of remembrance.
