Business

Business is a fascinating GSCE option for any pupil interested in finding out more about the world in which we live. Pupils are introduced to the subject by looking at small businesses and considering what makes a successful business person, as well as learning how to identify an opportunity and turn it into a successful business. Pupils use contemporary case studies and news articles to apply their knowledge and understanding to a range of business contexts. GCSE pupils study how businesses develop beyond the start-up phase by learning about the key business concepts, issues and decisions needed to grow a business and work in a global market. Topics include marketing, operational, financial and human resourcing decisions and how the wider world impacts a business as it grows.

Considering the influences on decision-making and the interrelated nature of business activity ensures the course provides a varied and challenging introduction to business. It also helps pupils develop as effective and independent learners. They become critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds as they consider issues from the perspective of different stakeholders and contemplate the extent to which business and economic activity can be ethical and sustainable.

Challenge & Extension: A range of enrichment opportunities to further promote interest in business related issues is provided. These vary from year to year and many are open to all pupils, whether studying business or not. Recent activities have included the IFS Student Investor Challenge, enterprise challenges, external speakers and visits to businesses such as the Mini car manufacturing factory in Oxford. The department Twitter feed @StGabsBusiness and course website, with relevant resources such as video clips and articles for wider reading, help to enthuse pupils and ensure learning is topical.
