Year 1 Explore Newbury & Donnington Castle

On Monday 24 March, our Year 1 pupils embarked on an exciting trip to Newbury town centre and Donnington Castle, marking the grand finale of their geography and history learning this term.

Looking very grown-up with their clipboards in hand and demonstrating excellent behaviour, the children walked through Newbury town centre and Victoria Park, playing a fun game of "I spy" with local landmarks. A particular highlight was spotting the Newbury mosaic, which depicts key moments in local history—many of which the pupils recognised from their recent assembly performance!

Using their geography skills, Year 1 identified different jobs in the town and explored where Newbury residents enjoy their leisure time. After all that learning, they enjoyed a well-earned refreshment stop at Weavers Walk Café, sipping on squash and tucking into cake.

The adventure continued at Donnington Castle, where the children saw the historic ruins up close. They eagerly identified key defensive features such as the portcullis, arrow slits, and turrets, bringing their history lessons to life!

It was a fantastic morning of hands-on learning in the Spring sunshine—a perfect way to round off the term!
