Seminars for Academic Scholars
Fostering a love of learning is a key focus in lessons at St Gabriel's and through additional opportunities such as a range of seminars for our Academic Scholars. On Thursday 8 November, Year 7 and 8 Academic Scholars attended their second lunchtime seminar this term. This time it was hosted by Mr Ives who put their thinking to the test by introducing them to playing Whist. He also discussed with them where card games originally came from and encouraged them to think carefully through strategy and how probability can be used to help them decide on their strategy. This was a highly enjoyable and interactive session which sparked some interest from students in continuing with Whist in the future.
In a similar vein Year 9 and 10 Academic Scholars were introduced to the game of Bridge on Tuesday 13 November. Getting to grips with the terminology, trumps and basic strategy including card counting certainly exercised their teamwork, decision making and thinking skills.
