St Gabriel’s Hosts the IET Faraday Challenge 2025

On Monday 17 March, St Gabriel’s was proud to host the prestigious IET Faraday® Challenge Day, welcoming Year 8 pupils from Trinity School, Newbury, Elstree, and Thorngrove to compete in this exciting national STEM competition.
The Faraday Challenge, organised by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), gives students the opportunity to experience life as an engineer for a day by tackling real-world engineering problems.
The challenge required pupils to work in teams to research, design, and create prototype solutions to a complex engineering task. It tested not only their technical knowledge but also their creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. The atmosphere in the room was electric as the teams grappled with the challenge, working against the clock to develop and present their innovative solutions.
St Gabriel’s fielded two highly motivated teams of Year 8 pupils, who impressed with their creativity and resilience throughout the competition. All the teams demonstrated outstanding teamwork and perseverance, producing thoughtful and innovative prototypes under pressure.
After a day of intense competition, Thorngrove emerged victorious, securing the coveted Faraday prize. Their winning solution earned them a spot on the national leaderboard, with the chance of progressing to the National Final and competing for a £1,000 cash prize for their school.
The IET Faraday® Challenge Days are part of the IET’s ongoing commitment to inspiring young people to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). These events aim to highlight the importance of engineering in shaping the future and to encourage the next generation of innovators.
Congratulations to all the participants for their hard work and creativity – and a huge thank you to the IET for providing such an inspiring and engaging experience. We look forward to welcoming the Challenge back to St Gabriel’s next year!
