On Friday 14 March, both Year 1 classes came together to deliver an incredible Junior assembly, sharing everything they had learnt about the rich history of Newbury. From mediaeval cloth magnates to the English Civil War, the pupils impressed everyone with their knowledge and confidence.
The assembly covered fascinating tales of Jack of Newbury, the 16th-century cloth magnate who owned what may have been the first factory in England, as well as the legend of the Newbury Coat. Pupils also explored the three Battles of Newbury — the First Battle of Newbury at Wash Common in 1643, the Second Battle of Newbury at Speen in 1644, and the third "battle" — the protest against the bypass in the 1990s. The famous Newbury Racecourse also featured in their presentation.
Year 1 pupils took to the stage in costume, each with a speaking part to share their historical facts with the Juniors. Their confident delivery and impressive memory were truly remarkable. The assembly ended on a high note with a special song about Newbury, which had the whole Junior School joining in enthusiastically.
A huge well done to all the Year 1 pupils for their hard work and brilliant performance — you really brought Newbury’s history to life!
