St Gabriel's Pupil Qualifies for Young Shepherd of the Year Final
St Gabriel's Year 11 pupil, Olivia, has qualified for the prestigious Young Shepherd of the Year Final, set to take place at the English Winter Fair in Stafford on 16 November 2024.
Olivia qualified for the national event at the Newbury Show in September, where she participated in two competitive events, showcasing both her sheep handling skills and extensive knowledge of animal welfare. Olivia entered the Pairs Class with a friend, presenting three South Down sheep—Amy, Alice, and Hector. This experience allowed her to refine her show etiquette and build confidence in the ring.
She then entered the Young Handlers class, competing solo with two Leicester Long Wools, Quilt and Quinny. This demanding event tested not only Olivia’s physical ability to guide and present the sheep, but also her expertise in sheep welfare and breed history. Competitors were rigorously quizzed on key aspects of animal care, from breed origins to managing illnesses, and even the correct way to tie halters.
Olivia’s passion for sheep handling runs deep. She has been working with the animals for as long as she can remember, helping family friends with their herds from a young age. Three years ago, her own family acquired sheep, and since then, her skills and experience have grown. Her performance at the Newbury Show is a testament to her hard work and dedication, securing her place in the upcoming National Final.
We are incredibly proud of Olivia’s achievements and wish her the very best of luck in November. We look forward to sharing more news about her success.
