Brought to life by playwright Nancy Harris and directed by Kimberley Rampersad, the Royal Shakespeare Company production reimagines the classic tale for the 21st century. The story follows an orphaned young woman who, dazzled by a pair of beautiful shoes, dreams of escaping her modest life. However, her enchanted footwear soon takes control, leading her on a journey to places she never intended to go.

This wickedly funny yet cautionary tale explores themes of pride, vanity, and individuality, all set against a backdrop of humour and poignancy. Pupils were captivated by the intimate setting of the Swan Theatre, which brought them closer to the characters and the magic of the performance.

The trip is part of the balanced educational experience we provide at St Gabriel’s, offering students opportunities to explore culture, creativity, and thought-provoking narratives outside the classroom.

Year 7 thoroughly enjoyed this enriching theatrical outing, sparking discussions about the play’s themes and messages on the journey back to school!

‘The Red Shoes’ was a very entertaining performance, with incredible effects and glorious dancing. The story was a tapestry of interweaving stories and plots. It all started with the main character, Karen, losing her mother. She was adopted by a rich family, the Nugents. The mother was vain and expensive; the father was shallow and money-loving. Meanwhile, their son was a fabulously creepy figure with some intriguing interests. It was a very well-rounded story with lots of hidden figures and mysterious ties waiting to be discovered! It was utterly unique and gory. I do not recommend it for younger audiences, but its humour certainly covers up the darkest parts! A perfectly made story with enjoyable characters. A wonderful treat for older families!'
