Drama Scholars Explore New Techniques with The Paper Birds

On Tuesday 19 November, the drama scholars from Years 7 to 13 had the unique opportunity to participate in a workshop led by The Paper Birds, a renowned theatre company known for their innovative devising techniques.

The session focused on the five core ingredients of The Paper Birds' theatrical style, equipping pupils with essential tools for creating thought-provoking drama.

Centred on the compelling theme of fast fashion, the workshop explored this global issue through a creative lens, encouraging pupils to reflect on its personal and societal impacts. The drama scholars engaged in hands-on activities, learning key devising techniques such as character-building and verbatim theatre. The use of real stories and authentic words through verbatim theatre gave their work an added depth, highlighting the importance of grounding performances in truth and relatability.

Throughout the morning, the pupils embraced the challenges of collaborative theatre-making with enthusiasm, showcasing creativity, teamwork, and a genuine passion for their craft. The workshop not only honed their technical skills but also encouraged them to think critically about the power of theatre to address pressing social issues.

The session concluded with students feeling inspired and enriched by the unique insights shared by The Paper Birds. This fantastic opportunity deepened and underscored the role of the arts in sparking meaningful conversations. The workshop marked another exciting chapter in the development of St Gabriel’s drama scholars, nurturing their artistic talents and fostering their ability to use performance as a force for change.
